God is in an elevator with one of his angels. While headed up to the 7th floor, He turns to the angel and says, “Have you heard about <subject>?” The angel replies, “No. What did they do while on Earth”? Our question at St. Mark’s is: what does God say?
This is the question we hope to find for every person or organization we come across. Everyone is unique – finding themselves already entrenched in a myriad number of stories and contexts. Thus, the story crew at St. Mark’s aims to help people and organizations:
- A – Dig out the details of their “field” (Matthew 13:44)
- B – Polish the story, so it’s told as well as best possible
- C – Display the tale for others to wonder at God’s Glory
There’s a number of questions we use in the story process to do just that. Posted here for free use by all:
- So what’s your name? What’s your hometown? How’d you come to St. Mark’s?
- And What past times or activities cause you to lose track of time, and thereby connect you to God’s world and your part in it?
- And as for after all of that producing and flowing in God’s Work for you – when recharging during your sabbath – what’s one thing that can instantly brighten your day?
- What are the contexts you find yourself in? What People Groups are you in? Where do you spend time during the week? What are your communities? Family? Church Family? Sports? What are the stories of those people?
- So now that we’ve gotten through the beginning questions. Let’s dive in. What is the story of where you’ve come from? Where was God in that story? Do you not see God in that story?
- And what is the story of where you are now? Where is God in your story currently? Is God not in your story currently?
- So then what is the story of where you want to go? Where will God be in that story? Do you know where He will be?
- And when you think about your story – those efforts where you flow in what God has for you: What do you all of your efforts to lead to? In other words, what do you want God to say when He tells the story of you? When He brags about you?
- And with all of that, imagine yourself 3 years from now. What stories do you think God will have told through you in that time?
- And what roadmaps (i.e. mentors / role models / stories / ideas / books / pop culture / etc ) have you been using for charting where God is taking your story?
- And in going back once more to where you’ve been: what are some of the ways you’ve been involved with God’s Mission on earth? What are ways you’ve served? Lives you’ve touched?
- So finally, if you had unlimited time and resources, what would be the thing you would want to go build or serve in or do? What’s your vision? What are you passionate about? What do you have a heart for?
